Obverse: Galley/Reverse: King in chariot. The obverse of this Sidonian coin displays a war galley with a row of shields along its bulwark. Below the ship zigzag lines represent waves. The three vertical notches above the ship, signifying the number three, indicate that the coin was minted in the third year of the king’s reign. The reverse presents the king, wearing a Persian style garment, with an upraised hand riding in a chariot driven by a servant. A figure dressed in Egyptian garb and holding a staff follows the chariot. The inscription reads t‘ on the reverse. The earliest coins of Sidon illustrate a war galley which presents its naval supremacy. Regarding the reverse imagery, it remains uncertain if the dignitary is a Sidonian or Persian king, but in either case it presents this Phoenician city’s special relation with the Achaemenid rulers.
