Obverse: Galley with fortress/Reverse: King in chariot. The obverse of this Sidonian coin is engraved with a war galley stationed in front of the fortified walls of Sidon. Below the ship two rampant lions stand back to back. The reverse presents the king with an upraised hand riding in a chariot driven by a servant. A figure holding a staff and dressed in an Egyptian style garment follows the chariot. There is only one letter above the chariot that reads mem, which is also repeated on the obverse above the towers. These coins represent the Sidon’s land and sea defenses and pay tribute to the king.
