Obverse: Galley with fortress/Reverse: King slaying lion On the obverse a war galley is stationed in front of the fortification walls of Sidon protected by high crenellated towers. Two lions standing back to back are depicted below the vessel. Above the walls two Phoenician letters are inscribed reading ʻb. The reverse depicts the king in Persian attire holding the forelocks of a rampant lion standing on its hind legs. The king prepares to strike with a dagger which he holds in his right hand. The inscription between the two figures reads the letters ʻt. On this silver coin of Sidon, both its land and sea defenses are portrayed. The reverse iconography is typically Persian in design, symbolizing the close relations between Phoenicia and the Persian Empire.
